What Happens When a Christian Sins?
November 12, 2006
Christians belong to churches
Acts 11:26 “…And it came to pass, that a whole year they (Barnabus and Paul) assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
Baptized and taught the commandments
Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples (Christians) of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
Christians should not sin
1 John 2:1 “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not…”
Israel sinned worse than the heathen
2 Chronicles 33:9-10 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel. 10 And the LORD spake to Manasseh, and to his people: but they would not hearken.
A Christian's sins can even shock the pagans!
1 Corinthians 5:1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you [church of God at Corinth, 1:2], and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.
Christians can practice sin without repentance
2 Corinthians 12:20-21 For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find you (Christians in the church of God which is at Corinth 1:1) such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish; lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults; 21 lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and I shall mourn for many who have sinned before and have not repented of the uncleanness, fornication, and lewdness which they have practiced.
A righteous man can turn away from his righteousness
Ezekiel 18:24 " But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live?…”(NKJ)
Disciples can depart from the Lord
John 6:66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him (Jesus).
Christians can depart from the faith
1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.
Body members gone missing
Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking [present active – to quit, leave entirely, to depart from] the assembling of ourselves together (a church gathering or meeting), as the manner of some; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
A branch may not abide in the vine
John 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
The Lord’s servant may bury the talent
Matthew 25:18 But he (the Lord’s own servant) that had received one [talent] went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money (an unprofitable servant, 25:30).
A Christian can become corrupt
2 Peter 2:14-15 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: 15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
Sin separates us from our God
Isaiah 59:1-2 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
Proverbs 15:29 The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.
If we forsake the Lord – He can forsake us
Deuteronomy 31:16-18 And the LORD said to Moses: "Behold, you will rest with your fathers; and this people will rise and play the harlot with the gods of the foreigners of the land, where they go to be among them, and they will forsake Me and break My covenant which I have made with them. 17 "Then My anger shall be aroused against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide My face from them, and they shall be devoured. And many evils and troubles shall befall them, so that they will say in that day, 'Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?' 18 "And I will surely hide My face in that day because of all the evil which they have done, in that they have turned to other gods.
No fellowship with the lord
1 John 1:6 If we say that we have (pres.act.indic.) fellowship with him (the Lord), and walk (pres.act.subj. – behave or live a lifestyle) in darkness (in sin), we lie, and do (practice) not the truth:
Sin can separate you from your church
1 Corinthians 5:11-13 But now I have written unto you (“church of God which is at Corinth,” 1:2) not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. 12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without [or outside the church]? do not ye judge them that are within [or inside the church]? 13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
A Christian’s sin can put Christ to open shame
Hebrews 6:6 and then have fallen away (they continue in sin without confessing it), it is impossible to renew them again (present tense) to repentance, since they again crucify (present tense) to themselves the Son of God (the “great High priest,” 4:14), and put Him to open shame. (NAS)
1 Timothy 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
The way of truth shall be evil spoken of
2 Peter 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
Our sin can cause other Christians to stumble
Mark 9:42 " But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.
Sin is not forgiven until confessed
1 John 1:9 If we confess (pres.act.subj.) our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Walking in the light
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light (“the word is a light unto thy path” Ps.119:105), as he is in the light (in agreement), we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth [continually] us from all sin.
The blood of the new covenant is for forgiveness
Matthew 26:28 "For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission [or for the forgiveness] of sins.
Don’t live in denial
1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin (pres.active.indic), we deceive ourselves (pres.act.indic), and the truth is not in us.
Don’t make excuses
Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins (with excuses) shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Sins in the heart as well
Matthew 5:27-28 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. .
Cleanse inside as well as the outside
Matthew 23:25-26 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. 26 "Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.
A high priest over the house of God
Hebrews 10:21-22 And having a high priest over the house of God (“the church,” 1Tim.3:15); 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience (inward), and our bodies washed with pure water (outward).
Let the word of God judge you
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner [or judge] of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to his eyes to whom we must render an account (Net).
Or you will be judged at Christ's coming
Hebrews 10:26-31 For if we (Christians) sin wilfully (no confessing) after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28 He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer (severer) punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God (high priest), and hath counted the blood of the covenant (forgiveness), wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
All have sinned
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (ie the kingdom of God).
Christ’s blood shall save us from wrath
Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
He washes Christians from their sins
Revelation 1:4-6 John to the seven churches…5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, 6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
So they can enter into the glory of God
Revelation 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth (ie “the glory of God”).
