September 06, 2007

Text: 1 Peter 1:20-21 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21 who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Christ was foreknown before the
foundation of the world
1 Peter 1:20a “Who [Christ, the redeemer v.19] verily was foreordained [or foreknown] before the foundation of the world…”

The Father loved Jesus before the
foundation of the world
John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world

Jesus was eternally with the Father
John 1:1,14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

They shared in the same glory
John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

Equal with God
Philippians 2:6 Who [Jesus], being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

God’s will and foreknowledge of Christ’s death
Acts 2:23 Him (Jesus), being delivered (unto His enemies) by the determinate [to mark off a boundary, or to fix a border – to be appointed, or purposed] counsel [plan or decree] and foreknowledge of God, ye (Israel) have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Christ was manifest in these last times
1 Peter 1:20b “…but was manifest [or was made visible] in these last times for you,

The incarnation
1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Hebrews 9:26 “…but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”

1 John 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

 “For you” – Gentiles
1 Peter 1:20b “…but was manifest [or was made visible] in these last times for you (“the elect pilgrims,” 1:1 – Gentile Christians),

1 Peter 2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Christ also came for the Gentiles
Luke 2:30-32 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

Romans 15:8-9 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: 9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.

Make disciples of “all” the nations
Matthew 28:19-20 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

Gentiles ordained to salvation - age-lasting life
Acts 13:47-48 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal age-lasting life believed.

christ redeemed Gentiles from the curse of the law
Galatians 3:13-14 Christ hath redeemed us [Jew and Gentile] from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The curse of the law for the Gentiles
Ephesians 2:11-12 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

The curse removed by the cross
Ephesians 2:13-19 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:  17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. 18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God.

He destroyed death and became high
priest for his brethren
Hebrews 2:14-18 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.  17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

Believing in God the Father through Christ
1Peter 1:21 “…who (“the elect pilgrims,” 1:1 – Gentile Christians) by [through] him [Christ] do believe [present active participle] in God [the Father v.17]

peters readers were now calling on the father
1 Peter 1:17 And if [since] ye call [present active indicative] on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

At one time they had No access to God as the Father
Ephesians 2:11-12 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh,…12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

THE COVENANT FATHER
Deuteronomy 32:6 Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?

Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.

Malachi 2:10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

Through Christ Gentiles have access unto the Father
Ephesians 2:18 For through him (Jesus Christ) we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way,  the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Faith and hope in the father – that He would raise
you up also and give you glory
1Peter 1:21 who by [through] him [Christ] do believe[present active participle]in God [the Father], that raised him [Christ] up from the dead, and gave him glory [or glorified him, NIV]; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Salvation for the elect with age-lasting glory
2 Timothy 2:10 Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal age-lasting glory.
