The Character of Moses

By faith Moses
Hebrews 11:24-27 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. 27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
“Faith demonstrates to the eye of the mind the reality of those things that cannot be discerned by the eye of the body” Matthew Henry
Our ambition
2 Corinthians 5:9 “… we make it our ambition to please him.” (NET)
Moses in the hand of God
Hebrews 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
Acts 7:20-23 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months: 21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son. 22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds. 23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
High positions in this age breed self-exaltation
Daniel 4:30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?
Moses refused
Hebrews 11:24 By faith Moses, when he had become great, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.
True greatness
Matthew 18:1-4 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted (be turned – to be changed), and become as little children (a lower position or less in rank), ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself (active voice) as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Who you obey first you love the most
Matthew 10:36-39 And a man’s enemies will be the members of his household.37 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.38 “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.39 “He who has found his life shall lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake shall find it.
Joseph refused in private
Genesis 39:7 And it came to pass after these things that his master's wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, "Lie with me." 8 But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. 9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
King Solomon did not refuse
Ecclesiastes 2:10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure.
Know how to refuse
Isaiah 7:15 Butter (milk churned –study of the word, 1Pt.2:2;Prov.30:33) and honey (enlightment of the eyes of from God, 1Sam.14:29; Eph.1:18) shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
Choosing to suffer instead of sin
Hebrews 11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season (maybe 60 years?).
Lovers of pleasures
2 Timothy 3:1-2,4 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men [Christians] shall be…4 lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.
Suffering affliction against the pleasures of sin
Mark 9:43 "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell the gehenna, into the fire that shall never be quenched -- 44 "where 'Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.' 45 "And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell the gehenna, into the fire that shall never be quenched -- 46 "where 'Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.' 47 "And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell the gehenna fire -- 48 "where 'Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched.'
Moses weighed the present against the future
Hebrews 11:26 Esteeming [reasoning, counting, weighing or calculating] the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for [because] he had respect unto [or he had his eyes fixed upon] the recompence of the reward.
Sharing in His glory by partaking of His sufferings
1 Peter 4:12-13 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch [or to the degree] as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory [or His kingdom, Mt.20:21,Mk.10:37] shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy (“a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed” 5:1).
The eyes of Moses never became dim
Deuteronomy 34:7 Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes were not dim nor his natural vigor diminished.
Moses’ reward is Abraham’s reward
Hebrews 11:8-10 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place he would later receive as an inheritance (not in this age), and he went out without understanding where he was going. 9 By faith he lived as a foreigner in the promised land as though it were a foreign country, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were fellow heirs of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with firm foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Refusing to compromise in order to obtain a better resurrection
Hebrews 11:35 By faith…Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance [or “refusing to accept release” RSV]; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
All the seed of faith shall be rewarded together
Hebrews 11:39-40 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise (it awaits the second coming of Christ):: 40 For God had provided [or having foreseen] something better for us (all the seed of faith), so that they would be made perfect (resurrected and rewarded) together with us (NET).
By faith Moses endured
Hebrews 11:27 By faith he forsook Egypt (all its greatness, pleasures, & treasures), not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing Him (present active) who is invisible.
