Physical Healing

September 04, 2005

The source of all human mortality
Genesis 3:17-19<> Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return." (NKJ)

All men must die
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Physical healing is not a guarantee
Acts 9:36-37 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.  37 And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.

This body is sown in sickness and disease
1 Corinthians 15:42-43 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It [the physical body] is sown in corruption; it [the physical body] is raised in incorruption: 43 It [the physical body] is sown in dishonor; it [the physical body] is raised in glory: it [the physical body] is sown in weakness [or infirmity, sickness, disease] ; it [the physical body] is raised in power:

We eagerly wait for the redemption of the body
Romans 8:22-23 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.

Trophimus left sick
2 Timothy 4:20 Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.

God had mercy on Ephaphroditus
Philippians 2:24-30<> But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly. 25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants. 26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. 27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him (not because it was guaranteed); and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.  29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation (Paul did not blame his sickness on sin in his life):  30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.

Pray to God for His will to be done
Luke 22:41-42 “…He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."

Jesus was not against doctors
Luke 5:31 Jesus answered and said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

Luke was a physician
Colossians 4:14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.

Wine was used for medicine
1Timothy 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

The death of Christ does not guarantee physical health
Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely he hath borne our griefs [sicknesses or diseases], and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:4 was fulfilled in the ministry of Christ
Matthew 8:16-17<> “they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

Spiritual healing
1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed

Sickness maybe a result of sin
John 5:5,14 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity [disease or sickness] thirty and eight years. 14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

Not all sickness is due sin
John 9:1-3 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

Sickness for the glory of God
John 11:4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

God can cause sickness
2 Samuel 12:15 And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

God uses sickness to test the mature
Job 2:3-7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.  5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. 6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.  7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

Grace manifested in bodily weakness
2 Corinthians 12:9 And he (Jesus) said unto me, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore will I rather glory [or boast] in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Jesus never failed in healing the sick
Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

He healed everyone that He laid hands on
Luke 4:40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

The first mention of a divine healing was for a “sign”
Exodus 4:1,6-8 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. 6 And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow. 7 And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh. 8 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign

The sign of healing confirmed a man of God
1 Kings 17:17,23-24 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. 23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth. 24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.

The Jews required a sign
1 Corinthians 1:22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

Jesus performed signs for a purpose
John 3:2 This man [a teacher of Israel v.10] came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."

Jesus healed the sick as a sign
John 4:47,49-50,54<> When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death The nobleman said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies!" 50 Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your son lives." So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. 54 This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee. John 6:2 Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased.

The healing of the sick was limited to Israel
Matthew 10:5-8 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And as ye go, preach, saying,  The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

Healing of the sick was a sign of the kingdom
Luke 10:9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

Jesus is the King and to have life in His kingdom
John 20:30-31 And many other signs

The healing ministry of Jesus revealed His credentials
Matthew 11:2-5 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, 3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?     4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: 5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

Sickness represented Israel’s spiritual condition
Isaiah 1:1-6 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. 2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. 3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider. 4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.   5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick

The Lord is the healer
Jeremiah 3:22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal

The apostles healed the sick as a sign
Mark 16:17-18 And these signs

All signs fulfilled there purpose by confirming the word
Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

An example
Acts 4:14 And beholding the man which was healed standing with them (the apostles), they (the Jewish leaders) could say nothing against it.  22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

Today we visit the sick rather than heal the sick
Matthew 25:36-40 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
