Local Church Membership Is Scriptural

April 24, 2005

Jesus loves the church
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.

The church is called His body
Colossians 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

There is one body not two
Ephesians 4:4,5  There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

Visible local church bodies
Acts 8:1 “…there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad…”

Acts 9:31 “Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria …”

1 Corinthians 16:1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.

1 Corinthians 1:2 “Unto the church of God which is at Corinth…”

1 Corinthians 16:19 The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.

1 Thessalonians 1: 1 “… unto the church of the Thessalonians…”

Revelation 1:4 “John to the seven churches which are in Asia…”

The church assembles together
1 Corinthians 11:18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.

Christ is the head of each local body
Ephesians 1:22-23 And hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is His body, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all.

Just as He is the head of every man
1 Corinthians 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

Each local church is “a body of Christ”
1 Corinthians 12:27 Now ye [at Corinth] are the (no definite article) a body of Christ, and members in particular.
A body requires members
1 Corinthians 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ (His body, v.27).

Joining a local church body is biblical
Acts 5:11 So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.    12 And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's Porch. 13 Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. 14 And believers (pres.act.part) were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women.

Added to the church
Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily (in Jerusalem) such as should be saved (“from this perverse generation,” Acts 2:40).
An official record was kept
Acts 1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said,  the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them (the church in Jerusalem) about three thousand souls.
Acts 4:4 Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
Acts 16:5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

The analogies of the church calls for membership

The local church is like a family
1 Timothy 3:5 For if a man know not how to rule his own house [or “family,” NIV], how shall he take care of the church of God?

The church is like a marriage relationship
Ephesians 5:28-32 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

The local church is like a flock
Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
The church is like a building
1 Corinthians 3:9 For we are labourers together with God: ye [at the local church of Corinth] are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.
Ephesians 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

Jesus commanded church membership
Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen

Disciples belong to churches
Acts 14:27 Now when they had come and gathered the church together, they reported all that God had done with them, and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 So they stayed there a long time with the disciples.

Baptized into “one body” as a member
1 Corinthians 12:12-13 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ (His local church body). 13 For by in one Spirit we (many members) were (in the past) all baptized into one body -- whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free -- and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

Water baptism adds “the called” to the local church
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise (“life for the age,” 1Jn.2:25; “heirs of the kingdom,” Jam.2:5) is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 41 Then they (those called) that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.  47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church (in Jerusalem) daily such as should be saved.

The preaching of the kingdom of God
Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women

The members of the body embrace the doctrine
Acts 2:42 And they (those added to the church) continued stedfastly [devoted to; adhere to; remain faithful; persevere] in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

The members of the body are “committed” to each other
Acts 2:44-46 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.

The elders watch over “a set” group of people
1 Peter 5:1-3 The elders which are among you I exhort… 2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight [or watchful care] thereof, not by constraint [force], but willingly; not for filthy lucre [self-gain], but of a ready mind;  3 Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock..

Only the members can be “accountable” to those over them
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; 13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

Only members of the body can be disciplined
1 Corinthians 5:11-13 But rather I wrote to you not to associate with any one who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or robber—not even to eat with such a one.12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?13 God judges those outside. “Drive out the wicked person from among you.”

Only the members have spiritual protection
Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

Jesus and local church are inseparable
Acts 9:3-5 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: 4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
1 Corinthians 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

Take Heed to the exhortation
Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us (holy brethren, 3:1) consider one another (the context is the church) to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together (in the local church, Acts 11:26), as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
