Text: Galatians 3:1-5 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. 5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?(KJV)

The Galatians apostasy shocked Paul
Galatians 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

(BBE) I am surprised that you are being so quickly turned away from him
(CEV) I am shocked that you have so quickly turned from God
(ESV) I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you

Galatians, you know better!
Galatians 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

The Galatians were being disobedient
Galatians 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

False doctrine turns one from the truth
Titus 1:14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

We either live by fables or the truth
2 Timothy 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

The Lord will take vengeance on those who do not obey the gospel
2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Romans 2:8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

The Galatians were without excuse
Galatians 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

Christ crucified was Paul's gospel
1 Corinthians 1:23 KJV But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

1 Corinthians 2:2 KJV For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

The cross of Christ put an end to the works of the law
Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Paul's only glory was in the cross
Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

How did you receive the Spirit?
Galatians 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

(BBE) Give me an answer to this one question
(CEV) I want to know only one thing
(NKJ) This only I want to learn from you

The hearing of faith
Acts 24:24-25 And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. 25 And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance [self-control], and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

The Holy Spirit sent to with God's covenant people
Isaiah 63:11 Then they remembered those days of old when Moses led his people out of Egypt. They cried out, "Where is the one who brought Israel through the sea, with Moses as their shepherd? Where is the one who sent his Holy Spirit to be AMONG his people.

It was promised that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit
Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Promised after Jesus is glorified
John 7:39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing [i.e. baptized] in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to His church
John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter [or Helper], that he may be with you for ever, 17 even the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you.

John 15:26 But when the Comforter [the Helper] is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Acts 1:4-5  And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." 8  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

The promise fulfilled on the day of Pentecost
Acts 2:32-33 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

Receiving the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:37-39  Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" 38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."

Acts 2:41 Then those who gladly received his word [receiving the Holy Spirit] were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

Acts 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

The Holy Spirit is given to those that obey the gospel
Acts 5:32 And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."

1 John 3:24  Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

Spirit = faith or flesh = works of the law
Galatians 3:3  Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

Philippians 3:3  For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:

Have you suffered in vain?
Galatians 3:4 Have you suffered so many things in vain--if indeed it was in vain?

Under what message did God work powerfully among you?
Galatians 3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

It is the hearing of faith that is power in you
1 Thessalonians 2:13 And for this cause we still give praise to God, that, when the word came to your ears through us, you took it, not as the word of man, but, as it truly is, the word of God, which has living power in you who have faith.BBE
