Text: Hebrews 11:13-16
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth the land (see v.9 "the land of promise").
14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
 
All died in faith
Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises [i.e. fulfillment of them], but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 
 
Faith in what?
Hebrews 11:8-10 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
 
The promise of the eternal inheritance
Hebrews 9:15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant…that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
 
Heirs of the kingdom
James 2:5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him
 
The Patriarchs in the kingdom
Matthew 8:11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
 
The promise = The heir of the world
Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
 
The promise remains unfulfilled
Acts 7:2-5 And he said, "Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, 3 "and said to him, 'Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.' 4 "Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell. 5 "And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him.
 
The fathers fell asleep
2 Peter 3:4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep,
 
The promise of resurrection
Acts 23:6 But when Paul…he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
 
Acts 26:6-8 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: 7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope’s sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. 8 "Why should it be thought incredible by you that God raises the dead?
 
The promise of eternal life
Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
 
1 John 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
 
Receiving the promise is future
Hebrews 11:39-40 And these all (who died in faith), having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: 40  For God had provided (or having foreseen) something better for us (all the seed of faith), so that we would be made perfect together.
 
They saw them afar off
Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off… 
 
Eyes enlightened
Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
 
Abraham saw the Messiah
John 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
 
Persuaded -- embraced -- confessed
Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth
 
Strangers and pilgrims SEEK A HOMELAND
Hebrews 11:14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country [homeland].
 
He sojourned in the land of promise, as a strange country
Hebrews 11:9-10 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
 
No turning back -- to the old life
Hebrews 11:15 And truly, if they (those who died in faith, strangers and pilgrims, v.13) had been mindful [call to mind, pondering upon or remembering – imperfect, active, indicative] of that country [a way of life, its present advantages] from whence they came out [or forsaken, separated from], they might have had opportunity to have returned [or turn back to].
 
They desired a better homeland, a heavenly
Hebrews 11:16 But now they desire a better country [better than the one they came out from in v.15], that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
 
The heavenly will soon come to the earth
Revelation 3:12 "He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. And I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.
 
Revelation 21:2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
 
Revelation 21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
 
Hebrews 13:14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
 
It will be like the garden of Eden
Ezekiel 36:35 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited.
 
Isaiah 51:3 For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.
