Text: Hebrews 11:13-16
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on
the earth the land (see v.9 "the land of promise").
14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
All died in faith
Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises [i.e. fulfillment of them], but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Faith in what?
Hebrews 11:8-10 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
The promise of the eternal inheritance
Hebrews 9:15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant…that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The Patriarchs in the kingdom

The promise = The heir of the world
Romans 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
The promise remains unfulfilled
Acts 7:2-5 And he said, "Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, 3 "and said to him, 'Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.' 4 "Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell. 5 "And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him.
The fathers fell asleep

Acts 26:6-8 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: 7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. The promise of eternal life

1 John 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
Receiving the promise is future

No turning back -- to the old life

They desired a better homeland, a heavenly
Hebrews 11:16 But now they desire a better country [better than the one they came out from in v.15], that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
