TEXT: James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it [Aorist Middle Imperative], all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let [Present active imperative] patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Brethren are doing the will of the Father

Matthew 12:49-50 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Suffering as a Christian

1 Peter 4:15-16 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

2 Timothy 3:12 Anyone who belongs to Christ Jesus and wants to live right will have trouble from others.

Temptation = word used in the sense of Trials

1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

Psalms 11:5 The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

Serving the Lord with Many Trials

Acts 20:19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:

We are appointed unto Afflictions

1 Thessalonians 3:3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto

God's people will definitely be tried and tested

Acts 14:21-22 They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God," they said. (NIV)

First command - Count it

James 1:2 My brethren, count it [Aorist Middle Imperative], all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

We fall into Trials

Luke 10:30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

Greatly Rejoice

1 Peter 1:6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

It is inevitable that we will encounter trial

John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

2 Timothy 3:12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution,

To Test our Faith

James 1:3 Knowing this, that the trying [dokimion - Tested] of your faith worketh patience.

1 Peter 1:7 That the trial [dokimion] of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

Jesus Endured and Overcame

Hebrews 12:3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

2 Timothy 2:12 If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.

Result of Endurance

James 1:4 And let [present imperative] endurance have its perfect [accomplish its intended goal] result, that [so that] you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Perfect, Complete lacking nothing

Matthew 19:20-21 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, [same word as perfect in Jam 1:4] go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole [same word as complete in Jam 1:4] spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Overcomer’s will receive the Salvation

1 Peter 1:7,9 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Crown of Life

James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried [approved], he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
