Bible Text: Romans 12:9 |

Text: Romans 12:9
Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

God hates evil and loves righteousness
Psalms 34:14 Be turned from evil, and do good; make a search for peace, desiring it with all your heart.
Hebrews 1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
Amos 5:14-15 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken. 15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

The danger of not abhorring
Psalms 36:1-4 The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, There is no fear of God before his eyes. 2 For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, that his iniquity shall not be found out and be hated. 3 The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise and to do good. 4 He deviseth iniquity upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.

Avoid Evil Influence
Psalm 101:3 I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not fasten its grip on me.
Fools laugh at sin
Proverbs 14:9 Fools laugh at sin, but among the righteous there is favor.
Amos 5:10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

Hating evil in ourselves
Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Depart from evil
Proverbs 14:16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

Taking the warning seriously
Ezekiel 3:21 Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.

Hold fast to that which is good
1 Thessalonians 5:21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil.

Cling to what is good
Ruth 1:14-18 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her. 15 And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law. 16 And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: 17 Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. 18 When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.
Blessed Man
Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Cleave to the Lord
2 Kings 18:3-6 And he [Hoshea king of Israel] did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did. 4 He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan. 5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the

kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. 6 For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses. 7 And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

Lose not those things
2 John 1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

My righteousness I hold fast
Job 27:6 My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

Hold fast instruction
Proverbs 4:13-15 Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. 14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. 15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

Things we have heard
Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

Cleave to Good Preaching
2 Peter 1:12-13 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. 13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

Preaching is a safeguard
Philippians 3:1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things  again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you (NASB).

Hold fast the form of sound words
Titus 1:9-11 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. 10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: 11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. 16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
2 Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

Cling to Good Thoughts
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Hold fast the brethren
Psalms 133:1 A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Being addicted to the ministry of the saints
1 Corinthians 16:15 I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)
