Bible Text: Matt 5:16 |

New Year 2021 Message

Let your light so shine before men

Matthew 5:14-16  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.  15  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.  16  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

John 8:12  Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Hebrews 1:1-3  God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,  2  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;  3  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person,

Command no 1: Don’t offend with your words

Matthew 5:21-22  Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:  22  But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Command no 2: Do not Lust

Matthew 5:27-28  "You have heard that it was said, 'You must not commit adultery.'  28  But I say to you, anyone who stares at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Command no 3: Keep your Word

Matthew 5:33-37  “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’  34  But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,  35  or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.  36  And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.  37  Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

Command no 4: Defeat Evil with Good

Matthew 5:38-42 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’  39  But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.  40  And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.  41  And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.  42  Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Command no 5: Love your Enemies

Matthew 5:43-48  “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  44  But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  45  so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.  46  For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?  47  And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?  48  You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Command No: 6 Don’t Parade yourself

Matthew 6:1-4  “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.  2  “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  3  But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,  4  so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Command No 7: Invest in the future

Matthew 6:19-20  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,  20  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Command No 8; Don’t Judge others

Matthew 7:1-2  "Stop judging, so that you won't be judged,  2  because the way that you judge others will be the way that you will be judged, and you will be evaluated by the standard with which you evaluate others.

Matthew 7:6  Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Eg: John 8:10-11 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?  11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

1 Peter 3:15-16  But set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts and always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess.  16  Yet do it with courtesy and respect, keeping a good conscience, so that those who slander your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame when they accuse you.

Command No 9: Ask don’t worry

Matthew 7:7  Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: Matthew 7:11  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Command no 10: The Golden Rule

Matthew 7:12 In everything, treat others as you would want them to treat you, for this fulfills the law and the prophets.
