Matthew Henry:
"Note, It is justly expected that those who have received mercy from God should study to make some suitable returns for the mercies they have received; and, if they do not, their ingratitude will certainly be charged upon them. Though we cannot render an equivalent, or the payment of a debt, we must render the acknowledgment of a favour."

Robert Emmons, in his book: "Thanks, How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier":
"Narcissism is a spiritual blindness… A preoccupation with the self can cause us to forget our benefits and our benefactors or to feel that we are owed things from others and therefore have no reason to feel thankful. The paramount characteristic of narcissism is a sense of entitlement. People with narcissistic tendencies erroneously believe they are deserving of special rights and privileges. When they are given a gift, they believe it is their due or right."

Ignatius:
"In the light of the Divine Goodness, it seems to me that ingratitude  is the most abominable of sins and that it should be detested in the sight of our Creator and Lord by all of His creatures who are capable of enjoying His divine and everlasting glory. It is a forgetting of the graces, benefits, and blessings received, and as such it is the cause, beginning, and origin of all sins and misfortunes."

Psalm 116:12 What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?
Psalm 116:17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving,

Robert Emmons:
"What does it mean to say that gratitude is a choice? It means that we sharpen our ability to recognize and acknowledge the giftedness of life. It means that we make a conscious decision to see blessings instead of curses. It means that our internal reactions are not determined by external forces."

"This is why the notion that it is unspiritual to thank God unless you feel grateful is false. Choosing by faith to thank God in spite of intense feelings of depression, disappointment, anxiety, etc. is deeply spiritual. This is why if you wait until you feel grateful to thank God, you will feel less and less grateful. But if you choose to thank God regardless of how you feel, you will feel more grateful more often."
