Sermon on the Mount – Part - 3

Gospel Message no 45

Blessed are they that mourn

Matthew 5:1-5 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:  2  And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

3  Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Genesis 37:32-34 Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, "We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son's tunic or not?" 33 And he recognized it and said, "It is my son's tunic. A wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces." 34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.

Psalms 51:3-4 For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. 4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight; That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.

Psalms 51:10-12 (NKJV) Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.

Psalms 32:1-5  A Davidic instruction. How blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.  2  How blessed is the person against whom the LORD does not charge iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.  3  When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away by my groaning all day long.  4  For your hand was heavy upon me day and night; my strength was exhausted as in a summer drought. Interlude.  5  My sin I acknowledged to you; my iniquity I did not hide. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD." And you forgave the guilt of my sin!

1 Corinthians 5:1-2  It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.  2  And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

2 Corinthians 12:20-21 For I am afraid, lest perhaps when I come, I will not find you as I desire, and that I will be found by you as you do not desire; lest perhaps there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, disputes, slanders, gossipings, pride, disorders; 21 lest, when I come again, my God will humble me before you, and I will mourn for many who have previously sinned and have not repented for the impurity and fornication and lewdness which they practiced.

James 4:8-9  Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.  9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

They Shall Be Comforted:

Isaiah 61:1-3 (NKJV) "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn3 To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified."

Blessed are the meek

Psalms 37:1-11 Davidic. Don't be angry because of those who do evil, do not be jealous because of those who commit iniquity.  2 Indeed, they soon will wither like grass, and like green herbs they will fade away.  3  Trust in the LORD and do good. Dwell in the land and feed on faithfulness.  4  Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.  5  Commit your way to the LORD; Trust him, and he will act.  6 He will bring forth your righteousness as a light, and your justice as the noonday sun.  7 Be silent in the LORD's presence and wait patiently for him. Don't be angry because of the one whose way prospers or the one who implements evil schemes.  8  Calm your anger and abandon wrath. Don't be angry—it only leads to evil.  9 Those who do evil will perish. But those who wait on the LORD will inherit the land.  10 Yet a little while longer, and the wicked will be no more. You will search for his place, but he will not be there.  11  The meek will inherit the land; they will take in abundant peace.

Numbers 12:1-15 Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married, for he had married a Cushite woman.  2 And they said, “Has the LORD indeed spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?” And the LORD heard it. 3 Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth.

4 And suddenly the LORD said to Moses and to Aaron and Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the tent of meeting.” And the three of them came out.  5 And the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent and called Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward.  6  And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the LORD make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.  7 Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house.  8  With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”  9  And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them, and he departed.  10 When the cloud removed from over the tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, like snow. And Aaron turned toward Miriam, and behold, she was leprous.  11  And Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, do not punish us because we have done foolishly and have sinned.  12  Let her not be as one dead, whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes out of his mother's womb.”

13  And Moses cried to the LORD, “O God, please heal her—please.”  14  But the LORD said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be shamed seven days? Let her be shut outside the camp seven days, and after that she may be brought in again.”  15  So Miriam was shut outside the camp seven days, and the people did not set out on the march till Miriam was brought in again.

Meekness is teachability

James 1:19-22 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;  20  for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.  21  Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.  22  But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

The meek are slow to wrath; they control their impulsiveness

Proverbs 14:29 Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.

Proverbs 15:1  A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Meekness lovingly bears with others even when it’s tough

Ephesians 4:1-3  I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,  2  With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;  3  Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Jesus’ Meekness is our example

Matthew 11:28-30  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  30  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
